Karin Hanssen is a painter. In 1994, after seeing the movie 'The Thrill of it All' (Doris Day), she started to focus on the theme of social determinism in her work. She introduced the mechanism of the flashback in her paintings and drawings, and the photo- and filmmaterial (genre cinéma de papa, screwball comedies) she uses, refers to post-war Modernism where free time, private property and a feeling of hope flourished. Next to this, her work reflects on art history in general, and genre painting in particular.
