MOVING MEMORIES. Contemporary Dance in Dialogue with Memory and History.

Date: Thursday 27th of October 2011

Venue: Japans Paviljoen, Monty, Antwerp (BE)

Time: 14:00-18:00

Perhaps one of the most elusive yet crucially important aspects of artistic dance is the divergent ways in which it involves the memories of both performers and spectators. But to what degree are traces of the past activated while creating or watching dance? In what particular forms does choreographic movement leave mnemonic residues? And what impact do recent artistic explorations of memory and performance have on the writing of dance history?

Fabián Barba, Ramsay Burt and Timmy De Laet will present their ideas on these issues as another step in an ongoing series of exchanges. Following their intervention, there will be a panel discussion with Rudi Laermans, Christel Stalpaert and Marianne Van Kerkhoven. The general aim of the afternoon is to facilitate reflection on how contemporary dance might function as a space of negotiation between memory and history.
