Symposium: JUST-NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCES: The Cinema of Hou Hsiao-Hsien
26 May 2015 to 27 May 2015
Cinema Zuid, Antwerp

Our two-day symposium, curated by Tom Paulus (University of Antwerp, BE), is dedicated to the work of the Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien, who is widely recognized as one of the greatest living filmmakers. During the seminar we will specifically deal with Hou’s film style and pay special attention to ‘the micro-cinematic’ elements, which David Bordwell described as ‘just-noticeable differences' and which are difficult to define: texture, pace, rhythm. The seminar will be attended by the director himself and his regular screenwriter Chu Tien-wen (one of the major Taiwanese writers), and offers lectures by international experts such as David Bordwell (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA), Adrian Martin (critic, AUS), Cristina Álvarez López (critic, ESP), Richard Suchenski (Bard College, USA), Bérénice Reynaud (California Institute of the Arts, USA) and James Udden (Gettysburg College, USA).

The seminar will be held in English.
